On June 19, 2018, the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) issued patent number 10 million to Raytheon Company, for a method that uses a light emitting laser instead of radio waves to determine the range and velocity of a target.  The historic patent, which is titled, "Coherent Ladar Using Intra-Pixel Quadrature Detection," is the first patent issued with the new patent grant cover design, unveiled earlier this year. Commissioner for Patents Drew Hirshfeld said, “The U.S. patent system serves as a reminder that our nation values and continues to be built by those who are willing to take risks, challenge traditions, push the boundaries of convention, and test new limits in design and thought.”
