Recent court decisions have highlighted the value of design patents as part of an intellectual property (IP) portfolio, particularly for individuals and businesses with distinctly designed products or packaging.  These decisions demonstrate the importance of understanding design patents, including the scope of the protection offered and the advantages obtained by design patents.

It is important for IP managers and decision makers to recognize the value of having design patents as part of an IP portfolio, as well as the potential risks of infringing a third party's design patent.
