The United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) is examining the impact artificial intelligence (AI) technologies will have on intellectual property (IP) law and policy, and is taking steps to evaluate whether revisions to IP protection related to AI are needed. The USPTO first published a notice to the Federal Register on August 27, 2019, seeking public feedback to questions focused on patent-related issues in regards to AI inventions. The deadline for this inquiry has been extended to November 8, 2019. As a continuation of this evaluation, the USPTO recently issued a second notice to receive further guidance on addressing copyright, trademark, trade secrets, and other IP rights impacted by AI. The deadline for feedback is set for December 16, 2019.
