The United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) announced today the launch of a new category of green energy innovations for its Patents for Humanity Program. The new award category is aimed at providing business incentives for inventors and companies addressing the challenges of climate change through green energy innovations in the wind, solar, hydrogen, hydropower, geothermal, and biofuels technologies. The Patents for Humanity Green Energy category is in addition to other recent USPTO initiatives designed to address the challenge of climate change, including the joint work-sharing program with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, the expedited examination procedures under the Climate Change Mitigation Pilot Program, and the partnership with WIPO’s GREEN program. Launched in 2012, the Patents for Humanity Award was recently codified into law when President Biden signed the Patents for Humanity Act of 2022.
