Makiko Coffland focuses her practice across all areas of intellectual property law, representing clients in patent, trademark, copyright, and trade secret matters. She also represents clients with the negotiation, enforcement, and defense of contractual matters.
Makiko is a registered patent attorney with experience obtaining patents in the fields of biotechnology, medical devices, and software and electronics, as well as designs in the clothing and mechanical industries. She also assists clients in securing and enforcing trademark and copyright protection; and advises clients on IP-related transactions and litigations, with a focus in trade secret and antitrust issues.
Before becoming an attorney, Makiko studied marine biology and molecular biology at Tokyo University of Marine Science and Technology, where she earned her bachelor’s and master’s degrees in the field. Makiko also worked as a researcher in the fields of environmental engineering and microbiology and as an invention analyst for patent examination at the Japan Patent Office. Makiko serves as a board member of the Japan-America Society of the State of Washington. She is fluent in Japanese and enjoys working with Japanese clients and companies.
