Tim Whalen is a patent and trademark attorney at COJK, focusing his practice on patent preparation and prosecution in the chemical and mechanical engineering fields.
Tim has extensive experience protecting innovations related to the forest products industry, in cellulose fibers and pulp applications, as well as in wood products, resins, and coatings. His broad technical experience also encompasses such diverse fields as aviation, electronic devices, processes and apparatus, mechanical devices, medical devices, and software and business methods. Tim advises clients on all aspects of patent and trademark portfolio strategy, including acquisition, management, enforcement, and resource allocation; and provides counsel and opinions on patentability, registrability, and clearance.
Prior to joining COJK, Tim was senior IP counsel at Weyerhaeuser, where he managed the global patent portfolio for the Cellulose Fibers business and provided considerable assistance to the Wood Products business. In this capacity, he worked with business and R&D leads to identify and align IP opportunities with business goals; advised on the management of business trade secrets; performed full-spectrum patent preparation and prosecution, including Patent Trial and Appeal Board procedures; provided patentability, right-to-use, and invalidity opinions; and coordinated with outside counsel and foreign associates. Tim also has several years of prior law firm experience in all aspects of intellectual property law.
Tim earned B.S. degrees in chemistry and mathematics from Willamette University, and earned his J.D. from UCLA School of Law.
